Hamgyŏng-pukto (North Hamgyŏng) is a province in North Korea . It was created in 1896 when Hamgyŏng-do Province was divided into Hamgyŏng-pukto and Hamgyŏng-namdo . The capital of Hamgyŏng-pukto Province is Ch'ŏngjin . 2.3 million people live in the province (2008 census).

Hamgyŏng-pukto borders in the north on the People's Republic of China and Russia , in the east on the Sea of ​​Japan , in the south-west on the province Hamgyŏng-namdo and in the west on the province Ryanggang-do .

history

The Hwasŏng and Haengyŏng Detention Centers are located in the province . Approximately 60% of the after South Korea had fled Koreans come from this province.

Administrative division

The Hamgyŏng-pukto province is divided into three cities and twelve districts. In 1993, the city of Rajin ( Rajin-shi ; 라진 시 ; 羅 津市 ) and the district of Sŏnbong ( Sŏnbong-gun ; 선봉군 ; 先鋒 郡 ) were separated from the province of Hamgyŏng-pukto and merged into Rajin-Sŏnbong, a city under central administration the government . In 2000 the city was renamed Rasŏn ( Rasŏn Chik'alshi ; 라선 직할시 ; 羅 先 直轄市 ). Before January 2005, Rasŏn was reintegrated. In 2010 it was declared a "Special City" ( T'ŭkpyŏlsi ; 특별시 , 特別 市 ).
