Þór Heimir Vilhjálmsson

Þór Heimir Vilhjálmsson (born June 9, 1930 in Reykjavík ; † October 20, 2015 ibid) was an Icelandic legal scholar.

Life

After attending high school in Reykjavík, Þór studied at the Scottish University of St. Andrews and the University of Iceland , where he received the degree cand.jur in 1957. acquired. This was followed by post-graduate work in constitutional law at New York University and the University of Copenhagen . At times he worked as a journalist.

In 1959 he moved to the University of Iceland as a research assistant. Three years later he took up a position as a lecturer there on a part-time basis, and in 1967 he was appointed professor. In this function Þór worked until 1976, between 1968 and 1970 as dean of the law faculty and from 1974 to 1976 as director of the Institute of Law.

He not only embarked on a university career, but also played an important role in Icelandic and European judicature. At the civil court of Reykjavík he spoke from 1960 to 1962 as deputy judge and between 1962 and 1967 as judge law. In 1971 he was appointed judge at the European Court of Human Rights . Here he was elected Vice President in 1998, and his term of office ended on October 31 of the same year.

He was also a member of the highest Icelandic court Hæstiréttur from 1976 to 1993 , where he also held the post of President from 1983 to 1984 and a second time in 1993. From January 1, 1994 he worked as a judge at the Court of Justice of the EFTA , from January 11, 2000 until his resignation on December 31, 2002, he was President of the Court.

Þór was a member of the Icelandic delegation to the UN General Assembly in 1963 . He took part in numerous international conferences, especially on questions of the law of the sea . From 1971 to 1974 he chaired the Association of Icelandic Lawyers and from 1973 to 1983 he edited a legal magazine in Iceland.
