Popular awakening

The Icelandic left-wing populist party People's Awakening ( Icelandic Þjóðvaki ) split from the Social Democratic Party of Iceland (Alþýðuflokkurinn) in 1994 .

Entering the parliamentary elections in 1995 with great expectations , she received only 7.2% of the vote and thus four seats in the Althing . These seats were held by the later Prime Minister of Iceland Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir and Ágúst Einarsson , Ásta Ragnheiður Jóhannesdóttir and Svanfríður Jónasdóttir .

In 1996 Þjóðvaki and Alþýðuflokkurin formed a joint social democratic group ( þingflokk jafnaðarmanna ) in the Althing. 1999, the closed People's Awakening and the Social Democratic Party with the People's Alliance ( Alþýðubandalag ) and the woman Alliance ( Samtök to kvennalista ) together to the then main opposition block Alliance (Samfylkingin).
