Þormóður Árni Jónsson , often also Thormodur Jonsson (born March 2, 1983 in Reykjavík ), is an Icelandic judoka .

Career

His first successes collected Þormóður from 2003 at the Nordic Championships with bronze in Stockholm and 2004 bronze in Lahti . In 2005 he won his first title in Reykjavík. Þormóður celebrated his first major international success when he started at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , where he failed in the quarter-finals against Iranian Mohammad Reza Roudaki by Ippon by O-soto-gari . In April he won his first two of a total of 13 national titles in his home town of Reykjavík in the +100 kg class and in the open men's class. Four years later at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , Þormóður failed against the Brazilian Rafael da Silva to Ippon.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Þormóður started in the +100 kg class. He was also the flag bearer of the Icelandic Olympic team at the opening ceremony. In the games he failed in the first round on Poland Maciej Sarnacki .

In 2005, 2007 and 2011 Þormóður won the gold medal in his weight class at the Games of the Small States of Europe .
