Þorsteinn Jónsson (director)

Þorsteinn Jónsson (born December 6, 1946 ) is an Icelandic film director . In 1978 he won first prize at the first Icelandic film festival for his documentary The Farmer (Bóndi, 1975). Attention he found mainly through its children's film dot, dot, comma, dash (puncture puncture comma strik, 1981) and Atom Station (Atomstödin, 1984), the first Icelandic contribution to the Film Festival in Cannes .

Life

Þorsteinn studied at the film and television faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. After studying film at Nippon University Tokyo , he returned to Iceland. Þorsteinn received a grant from the state cultural committee for documentary film portraits , with which he implemented The Farmer (Bóndi). The film won first prize at the first Icelandic film festival in Reykjavík in 1978 .

Several television films followed, such as Fisch unterm Stein (Fiskur undir steini, 1974), which provocatively analyzes Icelandic society. In addition, several documentaries were made, including Ash Wednesday (Öskudagur, 1975), which is about socially committed garbage collectors. At the latest with his children's film Punkt, Punkt, Komma, Strich (Punktur Punktur komma strik) Þorsteinn was well known to the Icelanders.

International gained recognition Þorsteinn with nuclear station (Atomstödin), the first Icelandic contribution in Cannes. The film was a flop, but internationally recognized because of "its clear commitment against rearmament and war in the time of NATO's double decision ".

Þorsteinn was director of the Icelandic film fund Kvikmyndasjóður Íslands and the film archive Kvikmyndasafn Íslands from 1990 to 1992 .
