Ādolfs Bļodnieks

Ādolfs Bļodnieks (born July 25 . Jul / 6. August  1889 greg. In Tukums ; † 21st March 1962 in Brooklyn , New York ) was Latvian politician and Prime Minister of the Party of Smallholders ( Jaunsaimnieku partija ).

Life

Professional career

After finishing school and studying, he became an inspector in the Ministry of Finance in May 1919 . He was later from December 1923 to November 1931 and then again in June 1932 a member of the Board of Directors and from November 1931 to June 1932 and from June 1932 to March 1933 Deputy President of the Latvian National Bank.

MP

Before that, however, his political career began. He was a member of the Latvian People's Council ( Tautas padome ), which declared independence from Latvia on November 18, 1918 . He then became a member of the Constituent Assembly ( Satversmes sapulce ) in April 1920 . In October 1925 he was elected a member of parliament ( Saeima ), in which he then represented the interests of the small farmers' party ( Jaunsaimnieku partija ) until May 1934 . At times he was also the secretary of the Saeima and chairman of the small farmers' party.

Prime Minister from 1933 to 1934

On March 24, 1933, he was elected Prime Minister to succeed Marģers Skujenieks . He was the first and only prime minister who belonged to the Jaunsaimnieku partija . On March 16, 1934, he was replaced by Kārlis Ulmanis , who set up an authoritarian regime after a coup on May 15 .

He then largely withdrew from politics. However, in November 1947 he was one of the signatories of an appeal to the chairman of the UN General Assembly, Oswaldo Aranha .
