The ČSD series EMU 29.0 (since 1988: series 405.95 ) are electric rack and pinion railcars of the former Czechoslovak state railway ČSD, which were procured for the Štrba – Štrbské Pleso rack railway located in the High Tatras .

history

The three railcar units were delivered in 1969 by the Swiss Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik SLM in Winterthur . They largely correspond to vehicles of the same type as they had previously been manufactured for the Arth-Rigi-Bahn in Switzerland .

The railcars run together with a non-powered, but otherwise largely identical control car of the R 29.0 series (today: 905.95), which is lined up uphill. In times of low traffic, solo operation is also possible. The vehicles were each given three doors on just one side so that passengers could switch quickly . Noticeable differences to the wagons of the Arth-Rigi-Bahn are the straight end walls between the railcar and control car with bellows transition. Both led to a closed appearance of the railcar units, the intercar junction can be used by travelers. The wagons are equipped with + GF + tram couplings, but they do not couple with compressed air and electrical connections.

The three units came to the Slovak ŽSR in 1993 , today: Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) and are still in use on their main route.

In October 2018, the ZSSK ordered five new electric rack and pinion trains from Stadler Rail / Switzerland, which will replace the now 50-year-old first generation vehicles by 2022.
