The vehicles of the ČSD series E 479.1 (from 1988: series 131) are electric double locomotives of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) for the 3 kV direct current system. Today they belong to the inventory of the Slovakian railway company Železničná spoločnosť Cargo Slovakia (ZSSK Cargo).

history

At the end of the 1970s, new electric locomotives were needed for heavy goods traffic on the sloping lines of Slovakia. Škoda in Pilsen developed a double locomotive, the main components of which are identical to the locomotives of the ČSD series ES 499.1 (today: series 362/363) developed at the same time . The conception as a double locomotive, however, came from the class E 469.5 (today: class 125.8). These locomotives were built in the mid-1970s for cross-border freight traffic on the broad-gauge Uzhhorod – Košice line.

Between 1980 and 1982 a total of 50 double locomotives of the E 479.1 series were delivered to ČSD. They each consist of two identical locomotive halves, each with its own serial and company number. Operation of individual locomotive halves is not planned and was never practiced.

With the division of Czechoslovakia on January 1, 1993 into the independent states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the machines remained with the Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR). Today the locomotives are part of the ZSSK Cargo portfolio. They are mainly used on the Košice – Žilina , Žilina – Bohumín and Žilina – Hranice na Moravě lines. They are located in the Spišská Nová Ves depot .
