The vehicles of the ČSD series M 284.0 were four-axle diesel multiple units of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) for express train traffic . The railcars are a further development of the M 273.0 series , to which they are similar in terms of their basic structure.

history

Four vehicles of the series were ordered and developed in 1939, the remaining two in 1940. It was not delivered until 1947 when vehicles were urgently needed. Therefore, at the time of delivery, they were already a bit out of date. The M 284.0 were manufactured near Královopolská in Brno . A further development of the vehicles followed from 1951 with eight vehicles of the M 284.1 series . Their main external feature is the streamlined design of the car body with the elegant, flattened forehead.

technical features

The railcars were powered by two supercharged 8-cylinder diesel engines with an output of 285 hp each. The engine was manufactured under license by the Saurer company near Královopolská . Four vehicles still had power transmission according to the BBC system , the last two according to ČKD . The drive system was designed as in the M 273.0 series , i.e. with a combustion engine and a drive motor in a bogie.

The car body with the elegant exterior had the cab for the driver at both ends. Behind it were the entry areas and between them the two passenger compartments (one for smokers, one for non-smokers) with a total of 74 seats. The passenger compartments were designed with space division 4 + 0 in the form of a compartment with a side aisle without compartment doors and partition walls. Emergency seats were arranged under the windows in the side corridor.

Type Calm 4 sidecar for the M 284.0 and M 284.1 series railcars

The first two vehicles were delivered in 1947 and used on test drives on the routes around Brno. They arrived on the section Podivín - Modřice the track Břeclav-Brno a speed of 138 km / h. They were approved for 110 km / h.

About the stakes of railcars, class M 284.0, one can say that the depot Brno Horní Heršpice was his domain. Also, Olomouc , Nymburk and Plzeň appear as their other employment places. They were used in heavy motorized express train traffic, including to Prague and Bratislava . Since the M 262.0 series appeared in 1949 , the vehicles could be dispensed with after around ten years of use, especially because the small number of units and the outdated drive system were judged to be unfavorable. According to official statistics from the Ministry of Railways, there were no longer any vehicles in service in 1961; the last vehicle was taken out of service in 1960 (M 284.005).

After retirement, some cars were converted to work or measuring cars, such as the M 284.003, which was still used at Škoda . After its retirement, the M 284.004 was used as a railway service vehicle and scrapped in 1989.
