The vehicles of the ČSD series M 284.1 were four-axle diesel multiple units of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) for express train traffic . The vehicles and their predecessor type M 284.0 are a further development of the M 273.0 , to which they are similar in their basic structure.
history
The vehicles were ordered and developed before the Second World War . The M 284.0 was not delivered until 1947, when vehicles were urgently needed. Therefore, at the time of delivery, they were already a bit out of date. The M 284.1 were manufactured near Královopolská in Brno (car body, 1948) and ČKD Prague (machine system, 1951). There was no conceptual further development of the vehicles. The main external feature is the streamlined design of the car body.
technical features
The railcars were powered by two 8-cylinder diesel engines with an output of 280 hp each. In contrast to the M 284.0 series , they had the 8-cylinder diesel engine 8 V 170 DR from ČKD Sokolovo . This engine was a naturally aspirated engine . Since they were very prone to failure, they were later exchanged for 12 V 170 DR motors. The oil pumps were also replaced in the event of damage. The overall performance of the vehicle increased to 600 hp as a result of the conversion. The vehicle was thus the most powerful railcar of the ČSD. Its engine performance was only surpassed by the M 296.1 in 1968 .
The passenger compartment was equipped with several compartments with side aisles and had 86 seats in what was then 3rd class. The heating was done using hot air devices with electrical energy.
commitment
The class M 284.1 railcars were deployed from Prague and served from there in heavy motorized express train service the routes going from there, for example to Turnov , Havlíčkův Brod and Jihlava . When enough railcars of the M 262.0 were available, they were used in their duty roster. As a result, the vehicles were not used again.
Their mechanical and electrical design was no longer up-to-date, and the small number of only eight cars produced operational disadvantages. As a result, the vehicles retired from active service after just ten years.
According to official statistics from the Ministry of Railway Affairs, five railcars were still in service in 1961. The official retirement of the last vehicle was 1964, when the last vehicle, the M 284.107, was retired. Half of the vehicles were scrapped and some were converted into work vehicles.
