The ČSD series M 273.0 were four-axle diesel multiple units for regional and express train services of the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). After the first two model vehicles of the M 251.2 series appeared, the vehicles were added to the series of blue arrows for particularly fast railcar connections on routes with a light superstructure.

history

The railcars were manufactured at Královopolská in Brno in the years 1933–1938 in five series of two pieces each. They were equipped with two diesel engines, each driving an axle with an electric drive motor in a bogie. The data given correspond to the vehicles of the 1st series. Compared to the previous models in angular shape, the vehicles had an elegant design. The main external features are the streamlined design of the car body and the retracted doors. Outwardly, the first two cars were similar to the M 251.2 without their distinctive attachment above the engines. They only got the elegant round shape from the M 273.003 .

The railcars were powered by two eight-cylinder diesel engines, which, connected to the generator, were each stored in a bogie. The diesel engines of the first two vehicles were identical to those of the M 251.2 series, the engine output of the following vehicles could be increased to 2 × 200 hp. The electrical power transmission took place according to the BBC system . Car numbers 5 and 6 had a different power transmission, which was constructed similarly to the ČKD RV circuit based on control with a relay and a generator with two windings. In all vehicles, the drive controller had eleven speed levels, but the diesel engine only had four different speed ranges.

The compartment for the passengers had the III. Car class and was heated with the cooling water of the internal combustion engine. From car no. 5, the cars were also electrically heated.

Individual vehicles varied in terms of length, wheelbase, weight and power. From car no. 3, all vehicles were capable of 110 km / h.

The first two motor vehicles were delivered to Prague in early 1934 , followed by four more to Olomouc in 1935/36 . In 1937 two cars were again delivered to Prague, and in 1938 the last two cars followed to Jihlava. At the same time as the motor vehicles, sidecars of the Calm type were supplied by the Ringhoffer company in matching colors . The vehicles were initially preferred for express train service. Around 1938 the Prague railcars were used in the circulation of the “Blue Arrows”.

In the course of its operating life, the M 273.0 series was shifted several times between the individual boiler houses, including to Cheb , Hradec Králové and Klatovy . Two vehicles stationed in Cheb had to be handed over to the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1938 , and in 1939 they returned to Olomouc. During the Second World War all vehicles were parked due to lack of fuel. All ten vehicles survived the war and gradually went back into operation until 1947. After 1949, when the new M 262.0 series appeared, the M 273.0 series came to an end . In 1952 the numbers 001, 004 and 006 were retired, in 1953 the 002 and 009 followed and in 1954 the 003, 007 and 008. In 1956 the last two vehicles were retired in Plzeň . Some vehicles were then converted into measuring vehicles, work vehicles and passenger vehicles.

After an interlude on a work train, the M 273.006 entered the holdings of the National Technical Museum in Prague (NTM) in 2007 . It is currently in the Chomutov boiler house . The M 273.007 was still on a work train in Štrba in 1992 .

The motor vehicles of the M 273.0 series were therefore in use for around 20 years. In particular, the first vehicles of the M 284 series, which had been further developed from the M 273.0 and only delivered after the war, were already retired when the last M 273.0 railcar was withdrawn .
