Omar Yoke Lin Ong

Tun Omar Yoke Lin Ong (born July 23, 1917 in Kuala Lumpur , † July 1, 2010 ibid) was a Malaysian politician and diplomat .

biography

Omar was a founding member of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) on February 27, 1949 and was a key figure in the formation of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) and MCA alliance . In 1955 he became Minister of Post and Telecommunications .

In 1957 he was a member of the delegation led by Tunku Abdul Rahman in the negotiations on the sovereignty of Malaysia from the United Kingdom in London .

After the independence of the Malaya Federation on August 31, 1957, he became the first Minister for Labor and Social Welfare in the government of Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman. In 1961 , Omar, descended from Chinese ancestors, converted to Islam . In the following years he was Minister of Health in the cabinet of Tunku Abdul Rahman from 1959 to 1962 . Between 1962 and 1972 was accredited as Ambassador to the United Nations in New York City . In 1963 he was one of the signatories of the London Agreement, which gave the state final independence under the name Malaysia.

Subsequently, he was minister without portfolio in the governments of Tunku Abdul Rahman and Abdul Razak . As such, he was also High Commissioner in Canada in 1966 and Ambassador to Brazil from 1967 to 1972 . In addition, he was temporarily acting Minister for Defense, Trade and Industry, and Agriculture.

On February 23, 1973, he was elected President of the state assembly of parliament, the Dewan Negara , and held this position until December 31, 1980. After his subsequent retirement from active political life, Omar was involved in social work projects .
