The M 290.001 and 002 were motorized railcars of the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) for long-distance traffic. Tatra referred to the vehicles as Tatra 68 . They were used from 1936 to 1939 on the Slovenská Strela express connection (German: Slovak arrow) from Prague to Bratislava. Although other trains served this connection in the post-war period, these vehicles shaped this route in such a way that the series is still equated with Slovenská Strela today.
history
The vehicles were used as an express connection between Prague and Bratislava as Slovenská Strela . In the 1930s, this route was covered in 4 hours and 28 minutes according to the schedule.
When the war began in 1939, the vehicles were parked. After the Second World War, the train was used for government and ministry trips, for example for trips to the Nuremberg Trials. For a short time the trains were also used on the regular Prague- Ostrava and Prague- Karlovy Vary connections .
The trains, which were considered to be particularly luxurious, no longer fit into the image of socialist rail transport after the February revolution in 1948 because they had too few seats. Car M 290.001 was parked in 1953 and transferred to Šumperk . Later it was parked at Vagónka Tatra in Studénka on the factory premises to be restored. In 1960 it burned out. M 290.002 was occasionally used for government trips until 1960 and later, incorrectly referred to as M 290.001, came to the Tatra Kopřivnice factory museum .
On January 8, 2010, the government of the Czech Republic decided to add the vehicle to the list of national cultural monuments as of July 1, 2010.
After the railcar had stood under a simple canopy outdoors for years in front of the museum and had already been badly damaged by the weather, it was removed in August 2018. In Hranice na Moravě , the vehicle is to be repaired and made operational again for 35 million crowns (around 1.4 million euros). After completion of the work in about two years, the "arrow" will be presented again in the Tatra Museum in Kopřivnice, in a new outbuilding protected from the weather.
technical features
The drive technology solution for the railcars based on the system developed by the engineer Sousedík was innovative . At low speeds, most of the power from the two gasoline engines was transmitted electrically, and mechanically at speeds above 85 km / h. For this purpose, each of the motors was connected directly to the - rotating - stator of a generator, the rotor of which, together with an additional electric motor, acted on the drive axle via a gearbox.
At low speeds or at a standstill, the speed difference between the stator and rotor of the generator and the electrical power generated thereby is high. It is transmitted to the axle via the electric motor. With increasing speed it decreases because the speed of the rotor increases and it therefore transmits more power directly mechanically. At 85 km / h the generator is bridged by a clutch.
The drive units were housed in the bogies.
