The ČSD series T 458.1 (from 1988: series 721 ) is a diesel-electric locomotive of the former Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD. It was developed as a further development of the tried and tested T 435.0, which was manufactured in large numbers .

history

The machine was manufactured by ČKD Praha from 1962 to 1970 as a faster variant of the T 435 . It had the same diesel engine and the basic structure of the machines had also remained the same. Outwardly, the locomotives were indistinguishable from each other except for the color. Only some dimensions differed slightly. The main difference between the two machines was the ratio of 77:14 on the T 458.1, which allowed it to travel at 80 km / h and increased the fuel supply to 4000 l. This then earned her the nickname “Velký Hektor” (the great Hector) from the operations department.

ČKD also delivered locomotives of this type to India, what was then the USSR , Iraq, Albania and Czechoslovak industrial companies.

In 1988 they were given the series designation 721. Later the T 669 and the more modern ČSD series T 466.2 (today: 742) took over their services.

After 2000, their scheduled service with the ČD ended, while they were still part of the ZSSK's operations in 2017. In the Czech Republic, the 721.033, 190 and 222, in Slovakia the T 458.1141, will remain as operational museum locomotives. After their retirement, some machines came into the possession of private companies and took over any transfer journeys there.

technical features

The locomotives were designed with multiple controls. The locomotive was controlled from the main driver's desk on the right in the direction of the front end. Only the drive switch and the additional brake could be operated from the auxiliary driver's desk, located diagonally opposite.

commitment

The area of application of the locomotives was mainly the transport of delivery freight trains and the shunting on the main routes. For example, they were represented in large numbers at the train stations in Praha , Kolín and Česká Třebová .
