The ČSD series T 499.0 (from 1988: series 759 ) was created in the ČKD Praha design office at the end of the 1960s / beginning of the 1970s. It was about a powerful and fast locomotive using a diesel engine with a bore of 230 mm.
history
In 1974 the first prototype T 499.0001 was completed and initially tested on the Velim test ring . The second test locomotive T 499.0002 followed in January 1975. At that time they represented a top performance in diesel locomotive construction in the world. The power was transmitted using mixed current technology with the latest direct current motors; the chassis was equipped with Flexicoil suspension . They had an electric car heater and an electric resistance brake as well as an ARR regulator, with which one could regulate the pulling force, the speed and the target braking. The car body with the large headlight gave them the nickname " Kyklop ".
During the test drives on the test ring, speeds of up to 176 km / h were reached. The second locomotive was occasionally on the road for test drives on the “Ostravan” express train between Prague and Bohumín . Although the machines could keep up with the class 218 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn in terms of performance, the locomotives were not mass-produced. The reasons for this were the high axle load of the locomotive and the progressive electrification of the most important main lines .
The two prototypes came to the Děčín depot in 1977 and were used there in heavy freight train service. At least with the T 499.0002 this service ran without any problems worth mentioning. After 1979 they were converted back to the ČSD's railway test ring and served as a test vehicle, including for crash-consuming buffer carriers. The T 499.0001 was dismantled after a fire in 1989, the T 499.0002 was first moved to Nymburk and later to Bohumín . Since 1994 it has had the status of a ČD museum locomotive. The machine was acquired from the Velim Railway Test Ring and, after being refurbished, put back into operation in 2015. Thanks to its resistance brake, it is suitable for simulating a trailer load .
