İslâm III. Giray

İslâm III. Giray (* 1604 ; † July 10, 1654 ) was khan of the Crimean khanate from 1644 .

Life

İslâm was born the son of Khan Selâmet I. Giray in 1604. In 1644 the suzeran of the Crimean Khanate, Sultan İbrahim of the Ottoman Empire, appointed him to succeed his brother Mehmed . In 1648 İslâm concluded an alliance directed against Poland-Lithuania with the ataman of the Zaporozhian Cossacks , Bogdan Chmielnicki , whose armed forces he reinforced with his Crimean Tatar units. He took part in the siege of Zbaraż in 1649, in the battle of Zborów in 1649 and in the battle of Beresteczko in 1651.

After the alliance of the Zaporozhian Cossacks with Tsarist Russia in the Treaty of Perejaslav in 1654, he switched sides and fought his former allies on the side of Poland-Lithuania.

Khan İslâm Giray was murdered in 1654. His brother Mehmed IV Giray succeeded him in the office of the Krim Khan.
