The airfield, which has existed since 1988, was originally called the "dirt road landing site of the Hō hi region " ( 豊 肥 地区 農 道 離 着陸 場 , Hōhi chiku nōdō richakurikujō ) by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries at an altitude of 771 m above sea level. NN operated. In 1992 the unpaved runway was taken over by the prefecture and expanded in 1997, asphalted for passenger flights and renamed the Zentralita central airport. The base of operations for the Oita prefecture disaster control helicopter Toyokaze ( MBB / Kawasaki BK 117 ) was also expanded. Since 1997 there have been three charter flights a week to Fukuoka International Airport on Kyushu Island.
