The Škoda 706 R was a truck made by the Czechoslovak commercial vehicle manufacturer Škoda . It emerged from the Škoda 706 truck from 1939–1945 and was produced from 1947 to 1958. From 1957 it was replaced by the forward control Škoda 706 RT .

History of origin and area of application

The Škoda 706 R was a further development of the Škoda 706 truck , which was manufactured in the Škoda main plant in Pilsen before the Second World War . After the destruction of the plant in Pilsen, production at the Avia plant started again in 1947 . From 1951, production in the newly established LIAZ works in the main factory in Liberec was handed over. Constructive improvements to the chassis made it possible to increase the payload to 9,000 kg.

The production was otherwise based on the pre-war variant. The designation indicates this with the addition "R", which meant reconstructed and included the following types of execution:

  • Platform truck with 7,300 kg or 9,000 kg payload
  • Three-way tipper with 6,500 kg or 8,000 kg payload
  • Omnibus with forward control and the designation Škoda 706 RO (large-volume furniture vans were also manufactured on the frame of the bus )
  • Front-wheel drive garbage truck with the designation Škoda 706 ROK

In addition to these basic versions, some special versions such as mobile ambulances, X-ray stations , sales vehicles, etc. were produced to supply rural areas. Of the vehicles built up to 1958, a total of 28,400 trucks and buses were manufactured. After the Second World War, the vehicles were the only heavy-duty transport vehicles in the civilian sector. In use, the vehicles were nicknamed Barci . The trucks were primarily used on large construction sites. A large part of the flatbed and tipper vehicles were also imported from the GDR between 1951 and 1956 .

technology

The specified technical data refer to the flatbed truck. Compared to the pre-war model Škoda 706 , the tried-and-tested structure has been reinforced so that loads of up to 9,000 kg can be achieved. The robust diesel engine, which works according to the swirl chamber method, has also been revised compared to the pre-war model. The gearbox had an unsynchronized 5-speed gearbox with a reverse gear on the rear wheel axle, which was typical at the time, and it had a differential .

The cab was a mixed construction. It consisted of a base frame made of hardwood planked with sheet metal. Inside, in addition to the bed for the three-person crew under the bench, the starter battery and fuel tank were housed in an extra wooden frame. The bench was covered in two parts with synthetic leather. The steering for a heavy-duty vehicle was still carried out without power steering. The steering wheel was made so big that some drivers could see through it.

The loading area and the side walls of the flatbed truck were made of wood. The loading area of the three-way tipper was an all-steel construction that could be lifted hydraulically. The drive for the hydraulic system was implemented by a countershaft of the gearbox and activated by the driver using a lever next to the steering wheel. In the models of the truck, the bodies were sprayed in dark green, the frame and the wheels in black.

The oil consumption of the engine was given as 0.8 liters per 100 kilometers, the maximum climbing ability was 32% (with a trailer and 5 t weight 20%), the turning circle of the truck was given as 21 m.
