history

Švyturys was founded as the Reincke Brewery in Memel in 1784 by the Memel merchant J. W. Reincke (according to other sources: Fr. W. Reinecke) at Mühlendammstrasse 23/25.

In 1871 the brewery was converted into a joint stock company, the Memeler Aktien-Brauerei & Distillation .

It became Lithuanian in 1923 and came under German administration again in 1939. In 1940 it was taken over by the Memeler Ostquell brewery . After the Second World War this was taken over by the Soviets and in 1990 it became Lithuanian again and was named Švyturys ( German  lighthouse ).

Utenos alus was founded in 1977 in Utena , Upper Lithuania .

The two breweries merged in 2001 to form a joint stock company. In February 2003 the company was converted into a limited stock corporation. Švyturys-Utenos is owned by Baltic Beverages Holding . In 2011 the company had a turnover of around 130 million euros with around 2,000 employees, making it the largest brewery in Lithuania.

The brand names of the individual breweries Švyturys and Utenos will be continued. In addition, the brewery is the only one that brews under license from the Danish Carlsberg brewery . The traditional "Memelbräu" beer is produced in Utena.
