The East Prussian Cultural Center for the preservation and care of the East Prussian cultural heritage has existed since 1981 and operates exhibitions, archives, a gallery and a museum. The state-funded center is located in the west wing of the Teutonic Order Castle in Ellingen in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district in Central Franconia . A branch office has existed in the Altvaterturm near Lehesten since 2009 .

The East Prussian Cultural Center contributes to the preservation and maintenance of the East Prussian cultural heritage. The East Prussian Cultural Center, an institution of the East Prussian Cultural Foundation , was set up in 1981 with the support of the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria , the sponsor country of East Prussia.

Exhibitions

The focus is on East Prussian regional studies and cultural history as well as contemporary art . Cross-border cultural work and cooperation with Polish , Russian and Lithuanian institutions are becoming increasingly important . Since the richest area of discovery of Baltic amber is in East Prussia, the center contains two rooms that are exclusively dedicated to the gemstone. East Prussian natural amber in many shapes and colors as well as pieces of jewelry and utensils from the Königsberg amber factory are on display.

In the museum section, numerous topics are vividly presented: historical hunting weapons, hunting trophies, copper engraving, majolica from the imperial factory in Cadinen , the history of the evangelical Salzburg exiles , a Königsberg citizen's room with furniture from the 19th century as well as memorabilia of the great tradition of the Königsbergers Schools and the Albertus University .

The model of the Warmian farming village of Wolfsdorf shows life in the countryside in the past. The original loom and the hand-woven textiles give an insight into old craft techniques.

archive

Numerous bequests with valuable documents from the areas of folklore , literature and photography are part of the archive. Special collections such as picture archive, glass plate negatives and school program brochures complement the holdings. An extensive special library is available.

gallery

The gallery on the 2nd floor houses paintings, graphics and sculptures by important artists. Käthe Kollwitz and Lovis Corinth are represented on the Curonian Spit , as are works by graduates of the Königsberg Art Academy and representatives of the Nidden artists ' colony .

Altvaterturm branch

In July 2009 the East Prussia Cultural Center opened a branch in the Altvaterturm near Lehesten. For this purpose, a room was rented on the seventh floor of this tower, which the cultural center East Prussia Ellingen designed as an East Prussian room. The history of East Prussia, churches, castles, palaces, famous personalities of the country as well as landscapes and natural spaces are explained on a total of 18 boards. The time of the Second World War with flight and displacement are also mentioned.
