Wolfgang Freyberg (born April 12, 1956 in Göttingen ) is a German historian and Slavist. Since 1985 he has headed the East Prussia Cultural Center in Ellingen.

Life

Freyberg finished his schooldays in 1975 after passing the school leaving exam at the Felix-Klein-Gymnasium in Göttingen. From 1975 to 1981 he studied history, Russian and political science at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . He passed the first and second state exams in 1981 and 1983. During his studies, Freyberg worked from 1978 to 1981 as the student manager of Göttinger Bildwerk e. V., an archive of historical image documents from the eastern regions of the German Empire . Since February 1985 Freyberg has headed the East Prussia Cultural Center in the Ellingen Residence . At the same time, he has been head of the East Prussian Cultural Foundation's office since 1994 .

In the East Prussian Cultural Center, Freyberg designed, planned and carried out a large number of special and traveling exhibitions and issued a number of publications. Many lectures on cultural-historical topics such as the Teutonic Order , the Salzburg exiles and the Rossitten ornithological station as well as amber throughout Germany complement his work. From 1988 to 1992, under the direction of Freyberg, the cultural center was expanded considerably with the establishment of new rooms. Numerous individual exhibits but also complete collections could be procured for the new permanent exhibition. The facility, including the archive and library, now has a total floor space of 1500 m².

Since the collapse of the Eastern Bloc , Freyberg has increasingly devoted himself to cooperation with Polish, Russian and Lithuanian institutions, such as the Kaliningrad Amber Museum and the City Museum in Friedländer Tor in Königsberg / Kaliningrad, the Marienburg / Malbork Castle Museum and the House of Copernicus in Allenstein / Olsztyn and the Museum of the History of Prussian Lithuania in Memel / Klaipėda . Since 2005 Freyberg has been able to set up a series of bilingual permanent exhibitions in Stuhm / Sztum , Saalfeld / Zalewo , Pr. Holland / Pasłęk , Lyck / Ełk , Goldap / Gołdap , Lötzen / Giżycko , Rosenberg / Susz , Johannisburg / Pisz and Rastenburg / Kętrzyn . Since 2007 he has been a member of the advisory board and the board of trustees of the Foundation for German Culture in Eastern Europe - OKR, Bonn. Since 2016 he has been a member of the Historical Commission for East and West Prussian State Research . Freyberg has extensive language skills in English, Russian, French and Bulgarian.
