Żeby Polska była Polską

Żeby Polska była Polską ( So that Poland becomes Poland ) is a Polish song written in 1976 by satirist and cabaret artist Jan Pietrzak . The music comes from Włodzimierz Korcz . In 1980 the song became the unofficial anthem of the independent trade union Solidarność and was considered an expression of the struggle against communist rule. It is still popularly sung in public today.

The song begins with a look back at the mythical early days of Poland and recalls the legendary founding fathers Piast , Krak and Lech . Then it mentions some people and events from the time of division , such as the farmer Michał Drzymała , who led the Prussians by the nose with his chariot, or the romantic poet Cyprian Kamil Norwid . After a reference to the Polish legions, the song ends with an evocation of the struggle for honor and fatherland and for the unity of all Poles "from Chicago to Tobolsk " in faith.
