Željko Sopić (born July 24, 1974 in Zagreb ) is a former Croatian football player .

Career

In his first year as a professional, Željko Sopić played for NK Zagreb . In 1998 he moved to Germany in the Bundesliga for Borussia Mönchengladbach . In its first season, 1998/99 with Borussia, the team rose from bottom of the table in the second division. In the following season 1999/2000 the targeted re-promotion was missed. Sopić he moved to league rivals LR Ahlen . He stayed in Ahlen until 2005, in the meantime he gave a guest appearance at Hapoel Petah Tikva in 2002 . After his time in Ahlen he returned to Croatia, still playing for NK Zagreb, NK Slaven Belupo Koprivnica and NK Lokomotiva Zagreb . In 2011 he ended his career.

Coaching career

After the previous head coach of Dinamo Zagreb , Zlatko Kranjčar , resigned after a series of defeats, Sopić took over the coaching position for a few weeks on an interim basis. On September 29, 2016, the previous Bulgarian national coach Ivaylo Petev became head coach.
