Șumuleu Ciuc

Șumuleu Ciuc (German: Schomlenberg , Hungarian: Csíksomlyó ) is a district of the city of Miercurea Ciuc , in Harghita County , in Transylvania , Romania . In Șumuleu Ciuc are the Franciscan monastery and the monastery church of St. Mary . Every year on the Saturday before Pentecost, it is a popular pilgrimage destination for the Roman Catholic Szeklers in Romania. In 1994 it attracted more than 400,000 pilgrims .

Geographical location

Șumuleu Ciuc is located in the northeastern part of Miercurea Ciuc, 3 km from the city center, on the banks of the Șumuleu River.

history

The first written mention of Sumlov comes from 1335. In 1352 the first church was built. The first Franciscan church was built between 1442 and 1448 by Johann Hunyadi . In 1530 and 1649 two chapels were added. The church was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The current church was built from 1802 to 1824 in the classicist baroque style. The crypt of the previous building was preserved. The interior construction took 72 years. The image of grace , a two-meter wooden sculpture of the Mother of God with the child, dates from the 16th century. The monastery school had a grammar school as early as 1630. In 1948 the church was elevated to a minor basilica .

In 1959 the former independent municipality Gemeindeumuleu Ciuc was incorporated into the city of Miercurea Ciuc.

A visit to the pilgrimage site by Pope Francis has been announced for the beginning of June 2019 .
