く , in Hiragana , or ク in Katakana , are Japanese characters of the Kana system that belong to the Hiragana and Katakana writing systems , respectively. They both represent a mora . In modern Japanese alphabetical sorting , they are in eighth position. The く is also the 28th letter in the Iroha , directly after the お and before や . In the Gojūon table (sorted by columns from left to right) か is in the second column (か 行, "Column Ka") and in the third row (う 段, "Row U"). Both represent [ku͍] .
In the Ainu language , the katakana ク can be written in the reduced version ㇰ to represent the final consonant k, as in ア イ ヌ イ タ ㇰAinu itak (Ainu language). Like other extensions of the katakana, this writing was developed in order to be able to represent Ainu sounds that appear in normal Japanese katakana.

Derivation
The form of both kana is derived from the kanji 久 . This is pronounced in modern standard Chinese as jiǔ , in Korean as gu .
variants
The Kana can be expanded with the Dakuten , to ぐ in Hiragana, to グ in Katakana and thus to gu in the Hepburn system . The phonetic value is modified to the form [gu͍] at the beginning and varies between [ŋu͍] and [ɣu͍] in the middle of the word.
The hand acute (゜) does not appear with ku in normal Japanese texts. However, it is sometimes used by linguists to indicate the nasal pronunciation [ŋu͍] .
Stroke order
The hiragana く is drawn with one line :
- Top left, descending line to the bottom right, which bends in the middle and leads to the bottom left.
The katakana ク is drawn with two lines:
- Top left, a short diagonal line to the bottom left.
- From the middle of the first line a straight line to the right. Then led in a wide curve down to the left. Apart from the first line, this katakana is identical to the フ.
Other forms of representation
- In Japanese Braille :
- The Wabun code is ・ ・ ・ -.
- In the Japanese spelling table , it is spelled as "ク ラ ブ の ク" (Kurabu no Ku).
