1–29 Park Circus

An ensemble of residential buildings is located at 1–29 Park Circus in the Scottish city ​​of Glasgow . In 1970 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. In addition, the building is part of a more comprehensive monument ensemble of category A.

history

The north arch of Park Circus was designed in 1855 by the Scottish architect Charles Wilson . The implementation took place in three construction phases. Houses 1 to 19 were built by 1859. The second construction phase (18 to 21) was completed by 1863. Houses 23 to 29 were built by 1873.

House number 22 was not completed until 1872. Between 1897 and 1905 the interior of the house was redesigned by Salmon, Son & Gillespie and a billiard room was added. William Leiper was entrusted with redesigning the interior of house number 18 in 1891. In 1905 house number 3 was completed by John Archibald Campbell . A theater was operated at times in house number 19. In 1955, Gillespie Kidd & Coia converted it into a prayer house.

The three-story row of buildings encompasses the northern section of Park Circus, the center of the Park District northwest of Glasgow city center , in a wide arch . In the middle of the square there is an oval green area. To the east is the ensemble 1–17 Park Circus Place , and the ensemble 1–5 Park Gate forms the western end . The houses are designed in the historicizing Italianate style . Their main facades are each three axes wide. The two final and the three central houses emerge slightly from the facade. The masonry on the ground floor is rusticated . The entrance doors are accessible via short front stairs with cast iron railings. The double-leaf doors are made with transom windows and flanking side windows. The windows on the first floor close with architraves and simple crowns . Window cornices below the windows structure the facade. The facade closes with a cornice . The roofs are covered with slate.
