11th Marine Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 11th Marine Infantry Division , also the 11th Marine Division , was a German nominal major unit in World War II .

Division history

The association was set up on the basis of an order from Hitler with the aim of deceiving the Allies about the withdrawal of German associations from the occupied Netherlands . To this end, as many divisions as possible have been renamed in the Netherlands. The 11th Marine Division was formed at the beginning of March 1945, later in March 1945 the 3rd Marine Division followed with the same purpose .

The association never reaches the strength of a full division, even if it was named that way for reasons of deception. The formal assignment was made to the 25th Army at the Commander- in -Chief Northwest . In mid-March she took over the islands of Goerre (where the Schindler Marine Regiment was formed), Schoewen (where the Kuffes Marine Regiment was formed) and Voorne .

Actually, the 11th Marine Division was supposed to be called in at the end of March 1945 to set up a 63rd Infantry Division. This 63rd Infantry Division also appeared in the war organization in mid-April 1945 without having experienced a suitable list, which meant that the 11th Marine Division continued to exist. From this point in time, he was assigned to the Diestel Corps Department in the 25th Army.

The 11th Marine Infantry Division only existed for around two months from the beginning of March 1945 until the German surrender on May 8, 1945.

The commanding officer was the sea captain Hans Ahlmann, including the former commandant of the Molde naval defense and of the 2nd ship trunk regiment.
