16th Marine Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 16th Marine Infantry Division (only 16 Marine-Division ) was a German nominal major unit in World War II .

Division history

The division was set up at Steenwijk in the Netherlands in early March 1945 . The association was set up on the basis of an order from Hitler with the aim of deceiving the Allies about the withdrawal of German associations from the occupied Netherlands . To this end, as many divisions as possible have been renamed in the Netherlands.

The association never reaches the strength of a full division, even if it was named that way for reasons of deception.

The 16th Marine Infantry Division only existed formally for around two months from the beginning of March 1945 until the German surrender on May 8, 1945.

The commanding officer was the sea captain Carl Hollweg, former commander of the 4th Ship Trunk Regiment.
