16BARS (initially 16bars.de ) is an online rap magazine launched in 2005 that deals with news about the American and German hip-hop cosmos. The name is derived from the song structure of a hip-hop song: a classic hip-hop text usually consists of two or three rap verses (parts) each with 16 lines (bars), interrupted by a chorus with eight lines (hook ).

Overview

16Bars.de was founded in 2005 by Ramon Diehl from Osnabrück. The original purpose of the website was to act as a kind of hip-hop database. The concept of the site changed quickly and Diehl began to fill the database with news from the hip-hop scene.

16BARS was particularly successful through its own YouTube channel. Initially, the focus was primarily on self-produced interviews. In April 2007, a video interview with Sido achieved a first notable success.

Since 2008, the company has also been developing its own video formats, which differ from conventional interviews. The first format was called "Street Rotation". Today "Hotbox", "Finishing Lines" and the "Rapquiz" are among the most successful formats of 16BARS.

In 2013, 16BARS was supplemented by the YouTube channel "zqnce". The channel should not only cover the topic of rap, but also cover the topics of society, politics and entertainment. The canal's first and most successful project was "Shore, Stone, Paper". In the video blog, the ex-drug addict Sick tells his life story. The format was so successful that "Shore, Stein, Papier" was also published in book form. The book was meanwhile also on the SPIEGEL bestseller list.

From 2010 to 2015, Visa-Vie hosted 16BARS. She is considered the first woman to make a name for herself in the German hip-hop scene through her interviews. Steph and Haci Altinpinar have been in front of the camera for 16BARS since 2017.

To this day, 16BARS is considered one of the most important media in the German hip-hop scene.

Formats

Street rotation

Street rotation is the first format of 16BARS that differs from conventional interviews. 16 German rappers should rap 16 bars into the camera. The whole thing was deliberately filmed and cut in a very reduced manner.

Rap quiz

The rap quiz is one of the most successful formats of 16BARS. Two rappers compete against each other in different categories and have to prove their knowledge in the rap cosmos. So far, the following episodes have been shot:

Hotbox

The “hotbox” is one of the newer formats on 16BARS. Since 2016, various artists have been meeting for an interview with host Marvin Game.

The special feature of the format is that the interviews take place in a car and hotboxing is carried out during this time .
