Second Soviet Antarctic Expedition
The Second Soviet Antarctic Expedition was in the years 1956-1958 an Antarctic expedition of the Soviet Union , which was led by Alexei Fyodorowitsch Trjoschnikow on the Antarctic continent; the Ob sea expedition , which left Kaliningrad on November 7, 1956 , was led by W. Maksimov .
A total of three ships were used to transport the expedition members and their equipment, all of which were powered by a diesel-electric drive . For the first expedition the RV Ob ( flagship ; captain IA Man) and the RV Lena (captain AI Wetrow) were used as main ships. The third ship was the Kooperazija of captain AS Jantselewitsch, this was mainly used as a transport ship.
The tasks of the expedition were as follows:
- Replacement of the first expedition ,
- scientific work for the International Geophysical Year (IGY),
- Organization of two IGY scientific branches near the magnetic south pole and the pole of inaccessibility ,
- the creation of a domestic traverse for sledge tractors for glaciology ,
- Oceanography .
