28 Liberty Street (formerly: One Chase Manhattan Plaza ) is a 60-story skyscraper in New York City . It is located in southern Manhattan , the Lower Manhattan district .
The building was completed in 1961 after around five years of construction. The building was designed by the well-known architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), while the plaza in front of the building was designed by Isamu Noguchi . It has 60 stories and is 248 meters high, this height makes it the 19th tallest building in New York City (as of 2016). The Gorden Bunshaft (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill) building was built in an international style and is similar to the Inland Steel Building in Chicago . The facade of the building consists of aluminum-coated steel girders and glass. It has a floor space of 180,000 square meters in the areas above street level and 600 square meters in the areas below street level. With the exception of a few technical facilities, almost all of the building's usable area is used for offices.
On February 10, 2009, the building and the plaza in front of it were listed by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission . In 2013 the building was sold by the previous owner JPMorgan Chase to the Chinese Fosun Group. As a result, the building was renamed 28 Liberty Street.
