In 1968 the mother died and in 1970 the father of the nine Ward siblings. The two youngest Matthew (* 1958) and Nelly (* 1956) were taken in by their already married sister Annie and her husband Buck Herring. Annie played the piano, and composed and wrote songs that the siblings sang together. Since Buck Herring worked as a sound engineer and producer, he soon made contact with other singers and musicians. Pat Boone made it possible for the siblings to release two singles: "Jesus is" (1972) and "I'm So Happy" (1973). The three now gave themselves the name 2nd Chapter of Acts ( second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles ). On the first two Christian albums of the singer Barry McGuire , which Buck Herring produced, they sang as a background choir.

The first own album With Footnotes they produced in 1974. The obtained thereon Easter song became her signature tune and was by many other artists gecovert . In 1975 the highly acclaimed live double album To the Bride by Barry McGuire, 2nd Chapter of Acts and "a band called David" was released. Several tours with McGuire followed.

In 1976 Annie's first solo album was released. In the summer of 1977, 2nd Chapter gave several concerts with Phil Keaggy , including the live triple album How the West Was One , which became one of the best-selling Christian albums of the 1970s.

In 1988 they gave their farewell concert in Houston, Texas.

In 1999 they were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame by the Gospel Music Association .
