A residential and commercial building is located at 3-5 Exchange Street in the Scottish town of Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1993 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest monument category A.

history

The building in the historic center of Jedburgh was built in 1868 as the commercial building of the Commercial Bank of Scotland . The Scottish architect David Rhind provided the design for the building, which was designed in the historicizing Italianate style . The director's living quarters were once located on the first floor. Today there are offices there. A municipal office has been set up on the ground floor.

The southwest-facing front of the three-story building is symmetrical and five axes wide. Its masonry is cream-colored sandstone with polished details. Arched windows with keystones are embedded in the ground floor and the first floor . They close with grooved cornices . On the other hand, elongated windows are installed on the second floor. The central axis is particularly richly ornamented. Pilasters flank the entrance portal consisting of two round arches, which are set in a round-arched archivolt and designed with trumeau . Its tympanum is ornamented with a stone rosette .

Elaborately crafted balconies with stone balustrades on consoles emerge on both upper floors . A serrated frieze divides the facade horizontally above the ground floor. It is continued on the consoles. The twin arched window on the first floor is modeled on the entrance portal, but designed with Tuscan columns. A cornice runs between the upper floors . The final cornice with a tooth cut protrudes far.
