The 36, quai des Orfèvres [ tʁɑ̃t'sis kɛdezɔʁ'fɛvrə ], often also Le 36 for short (German "The 36"), is a building on the south side of the Seine island Île de la Cité in the 1st arrondissement of Paris , opposite the left Seine river (Rive gauche) . It was built between 1875 and 1880 according to the plans of the architect Émile Jacques Gilbert and his son-in-law Arthur-Stanislaus Diet. The previous building fell victim to arsonists on May 24, 1871.

From its founding on August 1, 1913, until 2017, the building housed the headquarters of the Paris Criminal Police.

The building is known to many as the workplace of the fictional character Commissioner Maigret or from the Prix du Quai des Orfèvres or the film 36 Deadly Rivals (French original title: 36 Quai des Orfèvres , with Gérard Depardieu and Daniel Auteuil ).

The criminal police departments housed in the building were gradually relocated to a new building in the 17th arrondissement of Paris in 2017 . The house number of the new service building in the newly created street, named Rue du Bastion , which only houses this one building, was also deliberately chosen in allusion to the historic seat. Only the special unit Brigade de recherche et d'intervention (BRI) remained at 36, quai des Orfèvres .
