The 3rd Cavalry Regiment ( German  3rd Cavalry Regiment ) is a regiment of the United States Army with headquarters in Fort Hood , Texas . The traditional name of the regiment is Brave Rifles ( rifles denotes both rifles with a rifled barrel and the shooters armed with them). The regiment was formed on May 19, 1846 as the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen ( hunters on horseback ) in Missouri and became the 3rd Cavalry Regiment at the beginning of the Civil War . It then fought in the Indian Wars , the Mexican-American War , the Spanish-American War , the Filipino-American War , the First and Second World Wars , the Second Gulf War and the Iraq War . After being called the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment due to its temporary equipment with heavy battle tanks , it has been renamed the 3rd Cavalry Regiment since 2011 .

Outline and equipment

In 1942 the regiment, which had been mounted up until then, was converted into a tank reconnaissance unit. It received main battle tanks after the Second World War until it was fitted with Stryker wheeled armored vehicles in 2011 .

In contrast to the usual form of designation for units below the regimental level in the US Army ( platoon / platoon , company / company , battalion / battalion ), the names in the US cavalry are platoon, troop and squadron ( squadron ).
