5. Panevėžys Grammar School ( Lithuanian Panevėžio 5-oji gimnazija ) is a grammar school with almost 100 employees in the fifth largest city of Panevėžys in Lithuania .

history

In 1918 the first elementary school was founded in Panevėžys. From 1919, rooms in M. Kusinskienė's private wooden house ( Vasario 16-osios St. No. 26) were rented. The principal was Juozas Balčiūnas and the teacher Ona Pabedinskaitė. There were two school classes . 77 children between the ages of 7 and 14 (41 boys and 36 girls) learned here. There were also evening courses for adults (89 participants). A new school was built from 1922 to 1924. In 1926 it became the first Panevėžys city elementary school. From 1931 to 1939 318 students studied: 260 Lithuanians, 52 Russians and 6 Karaites . There was a student cooperative . They traded in notebooks, pens and rolls.

1954–1955 the school became the 5th Middle School in Panevėžys. In 1972 the sports hall and canteen were built ; at that time even 1,200 students were studying. From 2010 to 2011 the school became the Panevėžys fifth grammar school. In 2011 it was among the top 20 Lithuanian schools according to Veidas magazine .

The school was the first in Lithuania to participate in The Duke of Edinburgh 's International Award for youth . The awards were presented by British Ambassador David Hunt .

Annual school events include so-called "100-day celebrations" (one hundred days before the Abitur exams). In 2014 the high school became a "war academy" at this festival.
