The 60th Gray Cup was the 60th Gray Cup and the final of the championship of the 1972 season of the Canadian Football League (CFL). At Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton , the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 13:10. For Gray Cup MVP was quarterback Chuck Ealey chosen for valuable Canadian kicker Ian Sunter (both Hamilton).
background
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats won the East Division with a record of eleven wins and three losses. The Saskatchewan Roughriders won only half of their games, but only defeated the Edmonton Eskimos in the semi-finals of the West Division and then the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the final of the division.
Course of the game
The game started with a 52- yard drive from Hamilton, which ended with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Chuck Ealey to running back Dave Fleming . This touchdown was controversial as television footage showed the pass was caught off the field of play. After a punt was blocked by Hamilton's Bon Krouse , the Tiger-Cats captured the ball themselves and ended their drive with a 27-yard field goal by Ian Sunter . In the second quarter, Saskatchewan leveled the game after an 8-yard touchdown pass from Ron Lancaster to Tom Campana and a 20-yard field goal from Jack Abendschan with 10:10. After a pointless third quarter, it took until two minutes before Ealey started the final scoring drive with a 27-yard pass to Tony Gabriel from his own 15-yard line. After a 12-yard pass to Gabriel, a third pass to Gabriel brought Hamilton to the opponent's 41-yard line. After gaining two yards of space, Ealey found wide receiver Garney Henley , who brought the ball to the 26-yard line. When the time was running out, Sunter Hamilton shot with a field goal for a 13:10 victory.
Rookie Chuck Ealey, who made 18 of 29 passes for 291 yards and a touchdown and ran for 63 more yards, was elected Gray Cup MVP . The 18-year-old Ian Sunter was voted Most Valuable Canadian after two field goals and a conversion .
