66 Drive-In is a Grade II listed drive-in theater in Carthage , Missouri, United States . In 2003 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), the official list of cultural monuments of the US federal government .

history

The original 66 Drive-In drive-in opened shortly after completion in September 1949 on Route 66 on the outskirts of Carthage city. Construction was completed in early September 1949 with the completion of the 20 m (66 feet) high and nearly 19 m (62 feet) wide steel structure and the two 15.2 m tall curtains . During the work, which was carried out by a construction company from Joplin, MO , almost 30 tons of steel were used. Furthermore, the arrangement of the parking spaces, which at that time was planned for 500 cars, was chosen to be stepped in order to have a better view of the screen from each car. A company from Neosho, MO was commissioned to carry out the associated earthworks . The owners of the drive-in theater when it was founded were WD Bradfield and VF Naramore , both of whom also ran the nearby Roxy Theater at the time.

The drive-in theater opened with the musical film Two Guys From Texas, starring Jack Carson and Dennis Morgan , released in 1948 . At that time, the 66 Drive-In already had a snack bar and toilet facilities. At that time, the opening times were similar to what they are today. At the premiere in the 66 Drive-In , technical difficulties arose because one of the audio amplifiers did not work and there were also problems with the light, with one of the projectors also burning out.

The 66 drive-in today

After the drive-in theater closed in 1974, it was out of service for over 20 years and did not reopen until 1997. On April 2, 2003, the drive-in was added to the US government's official list of cultural monuments, the National Register of Historic Places . This makes it one of over 60 listed monuments in Jasper County . The 66 Drive-In is open every year from the beginning of April to mid-September and broadcasts its films even when it rains.
