7-deoxy-sedoheptulose is a monosaccharide from the group of heptoses .

properties

7-deoxy-sedoheptulose is produced by cyanobacteria of the species Synechococcus elongatus if the culture medium contains 5-deoxy- D -ribose . It has herbicidal properties through inhibition of 3-dehydroquinate synthase in the shikimic acid pathway of photosynthesizing organisms, whereby 3-deoxy- D -arabino-heptulosonate-7-phosphate is accumulated in the cells . It is being investigated as an alternative herbicide to glyphosate . At the same molar concentration in the millimolar range, it inhibits the growth of seedlings of Arabidopsis thaliana ( Arabidopsis thaliana ) than glyphosate.
