The 709th Infantry Division was a German infantry division during World War II . The division was set up in May 1941 and was stationed exclusively in France for a very long time . In 1944 she was involved in fighting against Western Allied troops in France, on the Cotentin peninsula . During these battles, the division was severely decimated and trapped in the city of Cherbourg . The 709th Infantry Division was captured by the Western Allies when Cherbourg surrendered on June 26, 1944.
