70 Virginis b is an exoplanet that the approximately 59 light-years from the sun away Yellow Dwarf 70 Virginis in the constellation Virgo orbits. He is assigned to the group of eccentric Jupiter .
discovery
The planet was discovered on December 30, 1995 by R. Paul Butler and the discovery, along with that of 47 Ursae Majoris b , was announced by Geoffrey Marcy on January 17, 1996 at the meeting of the American Astronomical Society . The discovery was made using the radial velocity method . 70 Virginis b was the second discovered exoplanet around a main sequence star similar to the Sun , after the planet 51 Pegasi b, which was detected a few months earlier .
properties
The planet orbits 70 Virginis at a mean distance of around 0.481 astronomical units and has a high orbital eccentricity of around 0.4. As a result, its actual distance from the star fluctuates greatly within its orbit. Its minimum mass was initially given as 6.6 Jupiter's masses ; according to recent studies it is around 7.40 masses of Jupiter. The discoverers did not rule out that the mass of 70 Virginis b could also be significantly higher and that it is therefore a brown dwarf . The estimated effective temperature is 360 Kelvin .
