94 Discount is an album by the experimental electro group Oval . It was released in 1995 .

The vinyl edition of the album was released together with a remix LP, which contained remixes by Mouse on Mars , Robert Rimbaud, Cristian Vogel and Jim O'Rourke .

style

The innovative, novel music by Oval was highly praised on the one hand and controversially discussed on the other. For example, the project's style methods included destroying music and audio equipment with scalpel knives, paint, and tape to damage the surfaces of compact discs . The damaged music was then reassembled and looped in rhythms determined by the jumpers and hangers of the CD.

94diskont was initially released together with the previous album , Systemisch . The album mainly revolves around the first track, Do While , a 24-minute track that was actually designed for the group's art installation "WOHNON". "Wwohnon" was exhibited across Europe on various occasions between 1994 and 1996, including art exhibitions and techno raves.

At the time of 94 Discount , The Wire placed the album at # 5 on their annual top list.

Allmusic awarded the album five out of five stars and wrote that "94 Discount is without a doubt an outstanding work in the field of electronically advanced, glitchy music".

In a 2003 report, Pitchfork Media placed the album at # 47 on their top 100 list of albums from the '90s. Mark Richardson wrote on Pitchfork:

“Sounds appear as multi-layered holograms, while at the same time the sound sources and ghostly copies vie for attention. A work of acoustic trickery, which produced the most relaxed and aquatic music of the 90s. "
