Oval is the name of a German electronic music project .

history

Founded in 1991 as a band consisting of Markus Popp, Sebastian Oschatz and Frank Metzger, the band split up in 1996 in strife and became a solo project by Markus Popp (born February 24, 1968 in Darmstadt, now living and working in Berlin). Popp also published in collaboration with Jan St. Werner from Mouse on Mars under the name Microstoria , and in 2003 together with Eriko Toyada as So.

Oval's trademark was the renouncement of conventional instruments and the use of special samples from CDs , which made them “stutter”, “hang” and jump (for example by painting them with felt-tip pens) and often mixed them together. The unmistakable, rhythmic and orchestral sound achieved in this way became the band's trademark and made them pioneers of glitch through their production method . Popp emphasized in interviews that he understood oval less as music than as acoustic design.

Various oval demo tapes, e.g. B. "azimut" and "Color" (1991–1992), lists u. a. Holger Lindmüller, Sven Bergmann, Martin Conrads, Oliver Leistert, Lars Broszat, Markus Arndt and Wiebke Grösch as other contributors. Oval's first release, "WOHNON", appeared in the three-person line-up mentioned above in 1993 on the Düsseldorf label " Ata Tak ". In contrast to all subsequent publications, a large part of the pieces were on “Wwohnon” with singing and German-language texts.

In 1993 they also developed the so-called “living sound” sound installation, which consisted of 8 modules with a total of 128 loudspeakers, which were controlled by an eight-track device. For this installation, some 20-minute instrumental versions of several pieces by “WOHNON” (“Hello outside”, “Everything in thoughts” and “Kardamom”) were created. The installation version of "Kardamom" appeared in 1995 in a revised form under the title "dowhile" on its third publication "discount94". In 1995 they began to further develop the installation concept in the direction of interactive software, which ultimately led to the so-called "Skotodesk". "94 Discount" was added to The Wire's "100 Records That Set the World on Fire (While No One Was Listening)" list.

Frank Metzger was called Oval temporarily also further than Oval / Frank Metzger and published among others Mego and the associated net label wrong, and Beta Bodega, alku and tu'mp3. In 2003 he founded the “Steno” project together with Emiliano Romanelli and Rossano Polidoro from tu'm .

Sebastian Oschatz is currently working as a designer in his company Meso digital interiors, among other things on the development of the graphic programming language vvvv .

In 2001 the Icelandic musician Björk Ovals sampled “Aero Deck” for her album “Vespertine”. In 1999 the American director Harmony Korine used the piece "Mediaton" in the soundtrack of his film "Julien Donkey Boy".

After a long break, Markus Popp published a large number of new pieces in 2010. The production was completely different from previous plants. Instead of self-programmed ones, Popp only used cheap, commercially available software and plug-ins. Instead of several high-end Apple computers, he used a commercially available, four-year-old, $ 500 PC. First, Popp released the EP "Oh" and, as a free download, the "Ringtone EP". This was followed by the album “O”, released as a double CD / LP with 70 tracks.

On March 8, 2013 Popp released a sixteen-track album entitled "Calidostópia!". The project was funded by the Goethe Institute and the Bahia State Cultural Foundation. In the same year he released VOA (2013), an album that was also the result of collaborations with musicians and singers from South America.

In 2016 Popp started his own label, UOVOOO. The label's first release was the album “Partura” by the French musician Mei (May 2016). On October 14, 2016, Ovals label released eleven-track album "Popp".

In 2018, the radio play "Ovalaroma" composed by Markus Popp, which deals with the connection between electronic music and perfume, was broadcast on SWR2.
