Martakert ( Armenian Մարտակերտ ; Azerbaijani Ağdərə ; Russian Мардакерт Mardakert ) is a city in Nagorno-Karabakh , disputed between Azerbaijan and the internationally unrecognized Republic of Arzach .
The city belongs to the Tərtər district in Azerbaijan . Since the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region in which the city is located, it has been administered by the internationally unrecognized Republic of Artsakh . In this, as Martakert, it is the capital of the Martakert province .
population
According to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, the city had 4,500 inhabitants in 2013. Other information is based on 11,231 inhabitants in 2010. Many of the Azerbaijani residents were displaced to other parts of Azerbaijan during the conflict.
Buildings
One of the city's landmarks is the Church of St. John the Baptist (Սուրբ Հովհաննես Մկրտիչ եկեղեցի) , built in 1881 and renovated in 2003 .
history
Mardakert belonged to the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region in the Azerbaijani SSR since July 7, 1923. In 1989 Mardakert had 8,325 inhabitants.
After the fighting began in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Azerbaijani army captured the city on July 4, 1992 as part of their summer offensive and then controlled it for about a year. On July 27, 1993, the city was captured by the Nagorno-Karabakh army and has been under their control ever since.
economy
The main industries in the 1970s were dairy farming and viticulture.
Town twinning
There has been a partnership with Vagharschapat , Armenia since October 8, 2010 .
