Alexander James "AJ" McLean (born January 9, 1978 in West Palm Beach , Florida ) is an American singer and member of the boy band Backstreet Boys .

AJ McLean was born on January 9, 1978 in West Palm Beach, Florida to Denise Fernandez and Bob McLean. When he was two years old, his parents divorced and AJ lived with his mother and later with his grandparents.

McLean's show career began in childhood. He already had his first sedcard at the age of seven and became a popular child model.

At one of his fashion shows, he was noticed by a director who hired him as Dopey for a theatrical version of " Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs " . He was so convincing that he got a two-year contract for the role. In addition to primary school, he attended the "Boca Raton Dance Studio", where he received two hours of ballet and dance lessons a day for five years. He also played a role in the popular US children's series "Hi Honey, I'm Home".

In 1990 McLean moved with his mother to live with his grandparents Ursula and Adolph in Kissimmee . There he attended the private drama school "Florida Academy of Dramatic Arts" for four years. During one of his countless auditions and job interviews, he met Howie Dorough and later Nick Carter , who in 1993 also became members of the five-man boy group Backstreet Boys , which has been internationally very successful for years .

In 2001, when the Backstreet Boys were on a world tour with their fourth studio album, Black and Blue, McLean publicly confessed to being an alcoholic and using cocaine. He then went to a rehab clinic, which is why the Backstreet Boys had to interrupt their tour. After a relapse and renewed withdrawal, he says he no longer has any drinking problems.

After a break from the band from 2001 to 2003 and two more albums and tours, the Backstreet Boys released their latest and seventh studio album "This Is Us" in autumn 2009, with which they then went on a world tour.

In the meantime, McLean went on small tours of his own in the summer of 2008 and in May 2010 to promote his solo album "Have it all", which was released in January 2010.

On December 17, 2011, McLean married his long-time girlfriend Rochelle Karidis in Los Angeles, and their daughter Ava Jaymes was born on November 27, 2012.
