A. Kadir Ozdemir

A. Kadir Özdemir (* 1977 in Turkey ) is a Turkish-German writer .

Life

Özdemir came to Germany at the age of 12 and grew up in Braunschweig . After studying sociology and modern history at the TU Braunschweig , he moved to Hamburg . Özdemir works as a freelance writer and has published three books on the subjects of nationalism , ethnic conflicts and the relationship between majority and minority societies.

Özdemir rejects the term “ migration background ” and instead advocates the term “migration heritage”. Since around 42 percent of “people with a migration background” have had German citizenship since their birth and therefore had no previous life in a supposed country of origin, this term no longer encompasses the reality of an immigration society . The term “migration heritage”, on the other hand, makes it clear that even the new immigrants enter a space full of pre-loaded debates and labels and thus their social positioning is shaped by the narratives from the labor migration of the 1950s to the current debates on refugees. Similar to gender , “migration background” is a powerful social construct and stress factor “on the hamster wheel of the integration debates” and has long since become an expression of exclusion, the negative special case.

In his column #defragmentiert on Migazin Özdemir discusses the term "class satisfaction" , which he also coined. The early economic stratification of the first generation of migrant workers , their symbolic subordination, would have led to “white class satisfaction”. White Germans would learn as young children that their whiteness is associated with privileges that appear so “natural” and are therefore not recognized as privileges. At the same time, they would observe the social status of people with a migration heritage, especially Black Germans, Turkish-Germans, Kurdish-Germans, Muslim-Germans, combined with a subliminal feeling of being superior to this group. The social rise of the subsequent generations of migrant workers and the call for participation and equal treatment have endangered this “class satisfaction” and triggered paradoxical behavior in white German social classes.

Özdemir's first publication was included in a list of recommendations by the German Bundestag .
