course

The road branches off the A965 in the center of Finstown . It initially runs in a northeastern direction along the coastline of the Bay of Firth . Around seven kilometers beyond Norseman , the road gradually turns to the northwest and follows the coast of Eynhallow Sound . Crossing the hamlets of Woodwick , Redland and Evie and passing the Broch of Burgar , the A966 reaches its northernmost point at Loch of Swannay . From now on, running in a south-westerly direction, the A966 reaches the village of Birsay in the north-west of the island, six kilometers further , where it ends not far from the ruins of Earl's Palace at the end of the A967 . It has a total length of 27.5 km.
