The A965 road is an A-road on the Scottish Orkney island of Mainland .

The road begins at a roundabout in the center of the island's capital, Kirkwall , where the A960 (Kirkwall - Gritley ) and the A963 also end. It runs west along the Bay of Kirkwall . After about eleven kilometers, it reaches Finstown at the head of the Bay of Firth , where the A966 branches off to the north. Beyond Finstown at Loch of Wasdale , the A986 branches off to Twatt . The road continues in a southwesterly direction and eventually reaches Stenness . At the southern end of the Loch of Stenness the A964 (Kirkwall – Stenness) joins . Turning gradually to the south, the A965 reaches Stromness . Before that, the A967 coming from Birsay joins . After a total length of 25.5 km, the A965 ends on the southern edge of Stromness.

Surroundings

There are numerous archaeological sites along the A965. Starting with the Grain Earth House in Kirkwall, the road passes the Cairns of Ramberry and Cuween Hill . It also leads past the Rennibister basement and the late Neolithic site of Stonehall . In Stenness binds the UNESCO - World Heritage " Heart of Neolithic Orkney " on. Last but not least, it passes the passage tomb Unstan Cairn north of Stromness.
