TOTAL E-QUALITY is an initiative that advocates equal opportunities for women and men and diversity in the workplace. The term is made up of Total Quality Management (TQM) and Equality for equal opportunities. It is also the name for a predicate. Since 1996 the initiative has been led by the non-profit association TOTAL E-QUALITY Deutschland eV.

society

The association was founded in 1996 by representatives of companies, associations, institutes and ministries. Founding members were u. a. Representatives of Bayer AG and the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth , which also recommends the association to this day (2016). Members can be natural persons of legal age and legal entities under public or private law who support the purpose of the association. The organs of the association are the board of directors, the general assembly and the board of trustees.

target

The association aims to establish and sustainably anchor equal opportunities in business, science and politics as well as diversity. The goal is pursued with events, public relations and the award of the TOTAL E-QUALITY rating.

Content focus

  • Promotion of women in management positions
  • Work-life balance
  • Equitable recruitment and development
  • Promotion of cooperative behavior in the workplace
  • Consideration of equal opportunities in the corporate principles
  • Diversity with all dimensions of diversity

predicate

Every year, the association awards organizations that campaign for equal opportunities with the TOTAL E-QUALITY award. This is awarded by a jury for three years. Organizations of all types with more than 15 employees can apply. The predicate consists of a certificate and the logo as a predicate symbol, which can be used by the awarded public relations organizations. The application process is based on information provided by the company. The applications are examined and evaluated by an independent jury. By 2016, 671 awards were given to 289 organizations. 180 of them have already successfully defended the award at least once, 31 of which have already won the sustainability award (receiving the award for the fifth time). Since 2015, 36 additional awards have been given for exemplary commitment in the area of diversity. These 289 organizations have a total of around 2.5 million employees and around 900,000 students who benefit from an equitable personnel policy. The ten largest companies that have earned the title are IBM Germany, Deutsche Bahn AG , AOK , Daimler , Bosch , Deutsche Bahn , Federal Employment Agency , E.ON , RWTH Aachen and Thales Group .

history

In the spring of 1994, a conference on the subject of quality management took place on Lake Como with participants from European countries. The connection between company-wide quality, increased performance, self-organization of the staff and equal opportunities was discussed there. The realization was that quality improvement initiatives are more successful when they are linked to equal rights and opportunities for women to take on responsibility and leadership positions.

Sociopolitical relevance

The employment of women and the proportion of women in management positions are increasing only slowly. The federal government and the federal ministries involved are behind the initiative and support its work. TOTAL E-QUALITY was explicitly mentioned in the "Agreement between the Federal Government and the umbrella organizations of German business to promote equal opportunities for women and men in the private sector" of July 2, 2001.

The "5th Balance of Equal Opportunities: Equal Opportunities on the Right Path" sums up accordingly.

criticism

The questions that must be answered in order to be awarded the title are viewed as target-oriented, although some critics do not go far enough and others are too TQM-heavy. The biggest point of criticism, however, is that the award is based on a company self-assessment.
