The 1985/86 season was the fifth regular season of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League . During the regular season, the five teams played between 59 and 64 games. In the play-offs, the Carolina Thunderbirds prevailed and won the Bob Payne Trophy for the third time in their club's history .
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Pinebridge Bucks stopped playing.
- The New York Slapshots were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Mohawk Valley Stars changed their name to Mohawk Valley Comets.
